In Between the Pages : Methodologies of an Artwork

When we hear the word “process”, the first thought that comes to our mind is that it is a lengthy or that it takes up a lot of energy, time, and effort to achieve something. Well, in the case of the Illustration Unit or Arts Section of the Creatives Department, “process” is indeed lengthy.

In the Illustration Unit, the process of making a textbook is a part of their everyday work. The Arts Section is responsible in providing creative images, visual designs and illustrations that we see in a textbook. The process is harder than it seems.

The first step in the process of making a book, in the case of the Arts Section, is that the artists will be receiving e-files or soft copies regarding the specifications that the authors wish to see in a book, especially the illustrations. Designated artists will edit these e-files and then a book conference will be held where all publishing departments involved in creating the textbook must be represented. Usually, the supervisor of the Cover Section, Layout Section and Illustration Section will be attending the conference accompanied by their own artists. The editorial supervisor concerned must be there also along with their associate editors. The authors should also be present during the book conference. Production and the Marketing Department will also be represented.

After making a collaborative decision that satisfies all parties it involved, the author will sign the Product History Folder which in turn will be the supposed tracking document for the artists it involved. For the illustrator’s purpose, the folder contains all the information regarding the process that the material went through.

Following the extensive processes, the artists will begin drawing the desired illustrations, visual images and creative features that are to be submitted to the Layout Section for the layout design of the book.

As Sir Ronald Dennis Isidro stated, “Kailangan gusto mo ginagawa mo dahil dito nagiging hobby ang trabaho.” Although the processes of making illustrations for textbooks are both energy and time consuming, efforts and time will never be wasted if you love what you are working on. Passion will get you through these processes.
